A Poem in Dialog with Russell Kennedy (Whom I Heard on a Podcast)

I push down,

further and further,

into the dark water,

digging and digging,

beyond ground,

into the black depths.

Ears and eyes are useless here,

but I hear her within me,

“Come find me,

come find me,

I am where the light is.”

I stop pushing at the sound of her.

I am still,

listening.

The surface gently pulls me up.

I rise, slowly,

the water holding me,

as I dream of seeing her again.

It takes no effort,

sweet girl,

to find you.
